April 15 Garden Club Field Trip – A Walk in the Woods

March 29, 2021 by Kara

We will visit the River Bluff Small Wild Area on the TVA Norris Dam property.

The wildflower trail is a 3.4 mile moderate walk that is known for a spectacular array of spring wildflowers including yellow trout lilies, Celandine poppies, bloodroot, spring beauties and toothwort.

To reach the TVA River Bluff Small Wild Area, take the Lake City exit 128 off I-75 north of Knoxville. Follow U.S. Hwy. 441 past the Norris Dam State Park entrance on the left and continue approximately 3/4 mile to Dabney Road on the right. Turn onto Dabney Road, bear to the left and the Small Wild Area trailhead parking area is located approximately 3/4 mile from U.S. 441.

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather.

We will leave the church parking lot at 10 AM.
For those that prefer not to picnic, Clinch River Brewing Company is just below the dam with craft beer and food. Opens at noon.

Mailbox Bows to Celebrate Dogwood Trail

March 11, 2021 by Kara

Our Lakemoor Hills Dogwood Trail will officially open on April 1!

To join Dogwood Arts in celebrating the art, culture and natural beauty of our region, all homeowners along the trail are invited to pick up a pink and green bow to place on your mailbox.

Bows can be picked up on March 20, 9am-12pm (Neighborhood Clean-up Day) at both the church parking lot and Lakemoor Legacy Park and Garden on Circle Lake.

A donation to cover the cost of the bows would be cheerfully accepted but is not required. You’ll find donation boxes at each bow pickup location.

After March 20, bows will be available at Suzan Bowman and Mike Parker’s home ~ 3717 Maloney Rd.  They will be displayed on a fence by their driveway through March 30th or until all bows are gone.

Be sure to check out all the trails around Knox County here: https://www.dogwoodarts.com

Beautification Committee – Subject: English Ivy Removal

February 27, 2021 by Randy Kerns

While Kudzu is the infamous “Vine that ate the South,” English Ivy is his nasty little brother. As the years tick by, Lakemoor Hills is suffering more and more from unchecked English Ivy growth on our beloved trees. This evergreen perennial vine can grow up to 90 feet with proper support. The vines smother and weigh down your tress. Oh and it is unsightly too.We encourage you to cut these vines to stop the growth and then maintain. It’s easy and rewarding work. Now is the time before spring foliage growth kicks in making some tree harder to access. I included a link from UT AG Extension for further info.

SPECIAL NOTE – DO NOT pull the vines from the tree. This will damage the bark creating other problems for the tree.

PERSONAL NOTE – I have been spending an hour here and there cutting even hiking into the woods around me cutting on other property. Simply cut at the bottom of the trunk separating the vine at the ground. I then pull the vine up from the ground leaving the vines on the tree alone. It takes a awhile for the vine to die on the tree…it eventually will and flake off. It’s tempting to pull even when dead but please don’t.

Unlike retail stores, it is the time for us to think about how we will decorate for the holidays…not have them up already. But that is a conversation for another day.

The Lakemoor Hills Garden Club has an answer for some of your exterior decorating decisions. They are again offering those beautiful Mailbox Toppers and Swags for your Front Door or Mailbox Post. They will even install them if you need assistance.

Attached is the order form which explains your order and pickup process. Also here is a picture including images of both the mailbox toppers & door charms.

All proceeds go to the LH Garden Club to help us enhance the neighborhood. Thanks for your support.
